Hi and welcome from Wollongong, Australia.
I’ve been interested in tech since primary school plus I’ve worked in Enterprise IT for 17 years. Everything from helpdesk, to server admin, to backups, to knowledge management, to team leader, to projects to managing a 350 site upgrade for a bank. So across all of these roles, a couple of things were in common. I was good at and enjoyed writing documentation, and in most of my roles I was either the official or unofficial trainer. So that’s my skill set, and that’s were Dave The Tech Dad YouTube channel and Blog came from. I’ve always loved helping people, especially with technology and I have the ability to tailor my training to my audience, whether they are super technical or have barely used a computer and are afraid of it. So I hope you enjoy my videos and blog and that you get some knowledge and enjoyment out of it.
A bit of history….
I have loved technology, way back to before I had a computer, back to when all I could do was read about computers in articles, like the Sinclair Spectrum, Commodore 64 and Atari 400/800 computers (yeah, that was a while ago)
The first computer my family got was an Amiga 500 when I was 14-15. It came with just the computer, a monitor and that’s it. We later saved up to get a second 3.5 inch floppy drive (no, not a hard drive) and a printer. Shmick.
I really stepped up my interest in tech when I was doing a short course course in 3D animation a few years later with a program called 3D Studio Max. I had a Mac, but needed Windows for the application, so I sold my Mac and bought a Windows PC. During my time doing the course, I designed a walk through of an apartment in 3D. 3D rendering takes a lot of computer power, and well, back then, computers were a lot slower than they are today. My PC was a Pentium 200Mhz machine (no multi core here), so I did some test renders and worked out it would take many months to render my video. I didn’t want to wait 6 months and lock up my computer for that long, so I went out and bought parts for 2 more computers, built them myself and networked them. I ended up renting another one for 2 months as the 3 still lacked enough power. After all that, I had 1 Intel Pentium 200mHz, and 3 Intel 233mHz pcs going flat chat 24×7 and it still took 6 weeks to render.
So from that time on, I was beyond hooked on tech. Computers, phones, IOT. You name it and I love it.
Come and continue that journey with me.
Cheers
Dave (The Tech Dad) 🙂
